dogs in islam
May 31, 2009Everywhere on the streets of London, you will see dogs. Carried by their owner, next to their owner, in designer carrier bags, at the back seat of cars. They’re everywhere, dominating the streets with passerby going “Omg, so cute!”
\
\
When I see them, I tend to walk at the edge of the pavement, at the risk of insulting the owner and the dog. I don’t do that because of Islam’s view on dogs. I do that because I am genuinely *&^* scared of dogs, or any other animal for that matter. (Dean’s brother and his gf own a cat in their home, and I put on gloves and socks when I come because I’m so scared of it scratching me. If I had a ski suit, I would be wearing that!)

I have always been curious why Islam doesn’t allow us to have dogs as pets. Pigs, I understand. But why dogs?
\
\
For those who aren’t Muslims, let me just explain what I know. Islam allows us to be near dogs, and pet them, play with them, whatever. The only thing Islam doesn’t allow is touching dogs when they’re wet, or allowing them to lick our faces. When that happens, we have to wash the area off with earth soil and then water. If the dogs are dry, no problem.
\
\
This is because they’re considered dirty. How so? I have no idea. –> This shows the failure of Islamic teachings in Malaysian schools. But I’m guessing it has something to do with its saliva or something about it when it gets wet.

I saw a dog the other day in a nail bar. The owner was doing her pedicure and the dog was just sitting there looking up at her, adoring her every move. Everytime the owner smiled, the dog will wag its tail, happy. The bond just melted my heart. Dogs are known to be obedient and extremely loyal to their owners, and I saw it firsthand! They really are! The dog just sat there, not disturbing anybody, gorgeous golden brown fur glistening in the sun, eyes only for the owner, almost like protecting her.

I would never have a dog, not just because of religion, but mostly because I don’t like animals, period. But it must be so satisfying to have a dog, loving and appreciating you all the time. I feel sorry for the dog species (the cute ones) that they are hated by the Muslim population.

I’m just curious. Does anyone know why we can’t have dogs?
dogs are actually considered very “mulia”. dogs helped cleaning up the earth after the noah’s ark/flood incident. that was why they are considered “dirty”. this is what I heard. I might heard wrongly.
same here…i avoid going anywhere near dogs because i am extremely terrified by dogs !
i think cos they had rabies in the olddd days… or something!

Hello there, what a nice blog you have here:)

As a Malaysian residing in Egypt, I once got asked by an Arab friend who questions the fact that majority of the Malaysian Muslims does not have dogs as their pets which they see it as preposterous and orthodox way of life. And sometimes its quite funny that you can see Jubah clad Arab ladies walking their dogs at the evening.
love dogs too. too bad i can’t have one. check this specially breed dog. love it’s tiny short feet.

Just so you know we CAN touch dogs even if they’re wet. But we are not allowed to keep them as pets.
Malay belief : sin when touching dogs = so NOT true.
It’s just that, like you said, we have to cleanse ourselves after we touch them, that’s all.
I go to a what we call ‘sekolah agama’ and not once have I been taught that we can’t touch dogs when they’re wet. Well you can’t if you’re not going to cleanse yourself after, but that’s a different case.
and, I do recall a story that the Prophet played with a puppy. Reaaally sorry if this isn’t clear. You can see that my english isn’t good enough.
If you do want more explanations, feel free to ask me. I’ll try to help, perhaps in malay?
