fv’s birthday bash

Update: Here’s the article if you missed it yesterday!

FashionValet.net turns one

Guests are happy mingling. Host is glowing radiantly. Models are flawless on the runway. Music is playing smoothly. Food is being enjoyed.

That’s what everyone hopes for when hosting a fashion show.

Online shopping website FashionValet.net (FV) turned one last month and as managing director, I was in charge of hosting an event to share our happy day with beloved guests.

Happy? Yes! Excited? Definitely! Nervous? A million times, yes!!

It was considered a big event to me as the guest list was bursting at the seams. We invited about 200 guests and somehow had over 300 guests who confirmed their attendance. With this many fashion designers, media and VIPs coming, I had to make sure the event was something special.

I knew at the time, the new Miss Universe Malaysia was about to be announced to replace Malaysia’s favourite girl, Deborah Henry. FV’s birthday event was right after the Miss Universe Malaysia finals, so I thought it would be amazing to have the newly crowned Miss Universe Malaysia to walk the runway for the first time at our event. This dream came true. Not only did the charming Kimberly Leggett lead the runway, but she was also followed by four other Miss Universe Malaysia finalists and best of all, beautiful creatures called male models who literally stopped movement in the audience when they walked.

In true FV spirit, I still wanted something fun and cheeky for our first year anniversary. The glamour and sophistication of having Miss Universe Malaysia there had to be neutralised with something hilarious. Only two faces popped up in my vision; Phat Fabes & Ben. This popular duo makes traffic jams bearable with their endless wit and jokes on the radio, so it was my wish to have them emcee FV’s birthday party. Again, my wish was granted.

Everything else just fell into place and after countless follow-up meetings and discussions, my colleagues and I were good to go. Invitations were given out, seating chart was finalised, menu was chosen, everything was sent to print, looks for fashion show were confirmed, goodie bags were done. We were nothing but ready to party.

Until the day came.

Sometimes, no matter how well-planned something is, there are things that you cannot control. For instance, other people’s punctuality or Mr. Weather. Worse, for amateur event planners like ourselves, there are many things that we overlooked.

First the tent was not big enough, so we had to call for another one on short notice. Second, our guestlist kept changing on the day itself! We had to change the seating plan several times, even to the minute before event started. Thirdly, there was not enough goodie bags for everyone since the guestlist grew even bigger.

Then, because we were not stressed enough, rain poured so heavily in the evening. We were thanking God that it rained early so that it won’t rain at the event. As we were happily skipping and dancing, one thing happened. The carpet floor in the backstage tent for the models got soaking wet from the rain and it looked like a mini flood in there. This only meant one thing; wet clothes and shoes. Can you imagine how stressed we were after that trying to physically mouth-blow the clothes dry?

And lastly, we were too busy planning that we all forgot to think about what we were going to wear to this event! The hosts must always look picture perfect at their own functions, a rule I always advocate. Well, do as I say, not as I do. I had not washed my hair and I did my own make-up in the public restroom a minute before the event. Thank God no one noticed. Or if they did, they were kind enough to comment behind my back.

Thankfully, the event went smoothly. Guests were happy and I started relaxing towards the second half of the show. From anxiety, to stress, to nerves, slowly the feeling of relief crawled into my heart.

As I watched the hundreds of guests, I proudly saw what FV had created. There I saw talented local fashion designers in one corner exchanging their knowledge and experience. In another corner I saw the media taking pictures and interviewing our loyal customers. At the buffet table, I saw my friends and family stuffing their purses with food. A smile crept on my face and I realised the efforts were all worth it.

I looked at my colleagues, and thought “Wow, we all look terrible” but there came gushing feelings of gratitude and love towards them. To plan something this important with the people who are as passionate as you, it’s the dream. Whatever challenges, we faced together. Whatever success, we shared with each other. I am so lucky to be surrounded by a wonderful group of people whose idea of fun is staying at the office until 2 am.

Happy 1st birthday, FashionValet.net! Who knows what the future brings for you, but I pray it be a good one with a growing customer base, lots more success and birthday events.

Just to share some things I learned from planning this event: The moral of this story here is hire a professional event planner and always have handsome male models.

My Star article is out today!

I write about FV’s event and the juicy BTS moments before it.
