my first crepe
September 23, 2012Since Dean and I seem to always have lunch and dinner out, breakfast is sort of the only time I get to experiment in the kitchen. I’m not a big breakfast person but I thought it would be nice if Dean and I can have breakfast together every morning to start off our day.
After a week of serving him what I call Chocolate King Encore (it’s nutella and bread, I just had to spice it up to make it sound exciting), I thought it’s time to show him what amazing things I can do.
Don’t fall off your chair. I didn’t make that. I got it from Google Images.Β
In London, Dean and I used to walk to our favourite crepe shop and he’d always order the same thing; chocolate crepe. He absolutely loved it and sometimes, he’d even order one more to go.
So I woke up earlier than usual and found a recipe to make crepes.
Couldn’t wait to surprise Dean!

I was so so so frustrated I got angry at the wok.
Fine, I know that you need to use the flat pan to make crepes, but I didn’t have any, so I improvised.
Ruined my morning! Threw away the whole batter and scrubbed the dishes with all my might.
I needed to release my anger some more, so I gave Dean the silent treatment all day for no reason.
I bought non stick pan at langkawi cost at only $30 and it works like a charm… langsung tak melekat i tell u and my lempeng (malay version of pancake) flew away when i shake the pan hahaha..get tefal la v…so far tefal tak tipy. it doesnt stick π
*tak tipu
haha, poor dean.
that wasn’t too bad. try again vivy. practice makes perfect. gud luck!
practice makes perfect!
Sorry vivy, hubbs and I couldn’t stop laughing at the end result… Esp with your tinge of humor .. Or sarcasm =p but if it makes you feel any better I probably would have killed my crepe anyway. So practice makes perfect! And dont la ignore the poor fella!
Im sorry I couldn’t stop laughing but nevermind Vivy! Practice makes perfect k?
Try, try, and try again. It’s all about practice. Cooking is both art and science. It’s not just about getting the right ingredients; you need to get a feel for the tools you have. Like how quickly your pots and pans heat up and cool down. Or getting the consistency right. Little things like that will affect your cooking to some extent, and you’ll only know what the right method or consistency is after you’ve done it a few times. After I moved house (and changed kitchen hob types and used different pots/pans), I had to readjust accordingly.
So just keep on experimenting. I’m sure Dean is a willing guinea pig π
Good luck!
cuba lagi ye vivy, kuali tu non stick x?
Vivy, kalau x de the flat pan, masa masuk dlm kuali, u iena angkat and gelek2 kuali tu. Try suruh ur sis or mother in law ajar. Plus i thought u hv the pancake/panini /sandwich maker? Or, kalau kuali tu melekat, either dia bukan type non stick, or u guna utk masa benda berkuah/be
rair the nite b4. So u ‘rinse’ it off w goreng w minyak the whole kuali (we all masak ikan kering – less minyak n just side dish. Gi house of presentation ada tefal flat pan
pity u dean….:)
Hahaha, u re funny. ;P
Dont be sad vivy…you can try again…. But dont forget to use non stick pan or Skillet, or just gris the frying pan with butter or oil and make sure the crepe cooked through before you flip it… If you have time, try this recipes …. Its so yummy…and not too hard to prepare http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/chocolate-strawberry-crepes-recipe/index.html
Will be cheering for Chef Vivy….
Kah kah! ROFLOL!!
Tak pasal2 dean pulak yang kena.. hihi.. anyways, what happened to the plan of Fishcakes and ayam panggang? =???
No worries la, V… dean would still eat whatever u cook even it turns out hangus… U will make a good cook someday! Jangan risauuuuuu =D
Hi, I did crepe last time. U can try again. Some tips:
1. Try use mixer. They mixed everything with better result
2. Non stick pan
3. I use butter to oil the pan – but actually you don’t have to. If the pan sticks to crepe, you can use oil spray
Sorry.. i meant to say a blender. My brain doesn’t work properly after some brain operation.
don’t worry, sometimes rupa tak cantik but rasa sedap! i know mine always happen like that. the other day i tried to flip some eggs and half ended up on the stove! ehehe..
dearest vivy, cooking can sometimes be emotional. especially for newlyweds. but as time go by I think we can actually enjoy the whole process and even if it doesn’t turn out the way we expected, we know we can always tapau and make another next time .Probably a smile would lessen the effect too! hehe
The beauty of trial and error cooking. Love homecooked meals. π
Ah ha! As a husband too I always wondered why the other halves like to give us the silent treatment when we did nothing wrong in the first place. I pity Dean; stay strong man! “Patience is virtue” they said.. #husbandsunite
Anyway good effort and experience in the kitchen to you Vivy. A journey to a man’s heart is not as easy as it sounds. Remember, the most important thing is, as long as what our wives cook is edible (and not poisonous) and no matter what level of cooking skills you have, us ‘guinea pigs’ are more than happy to taste them
Hurmm tak baik treat hubby macam tu. Luckily Dean is understanding. Youtube can ada, V. Type crepe, berduyun keluar. Nak impress Dean, make Youtube ur bestfren <3 paling senang xx
Vivy, get urself one of these, bought mine at french culinary institute in kl, super effective! Its about rm200+, tapi tahan lama sangat!https://www.google.com.sg/search?q=cast+iron+crepe+pan&hl=en&client=safari&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=KqFfUI2iC9HwrQfWiYDQCA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1024&bih=672#biv=i|23;d|Cz2vXt8dYKYa2M:
Good luck π
xde flat kuali pun xper..
masukkn batter n gelek2 kan kuali tu
biar batter nipis n sekata..
practice makes perfect. dun give up ye..
π
hai vivy, it’s ok don’t worry no one is perfect on d 1st try…..i think ur batter is ok, just that it sticks to the pan….did u spread a little bit of oil all over on the pan before frying? Or if u don’t like oil, u can take a stick of butter and rub it a bit all over the pan to make sure it doesn’t stick…crepe is very thin, so u have to be quick and maybe u can use a triangle thing that the abang burger use (i’m sorry i don’t know the name) to cook it, if u are using a big pan like that……..i think d best way to learn to make this is if u order a burger special at a burger ramli stall, and watch properly how they fry the eggs that is used to cover the burger….same method……
ya, i agree w jihan. one more thing, even if the crepe doesn’t look good, you’ll be surprise if it tastes ok. presentation is a skill that need to be developed over time. believe me, it will taste good eventho it sticks like hell on your kuali. π
good job V!
Hmm..A++ for effort..haaaaa..why dont BOTH of u cook together?..:) sure mesti xde silent treatment punya.Huahaha.
i watched hell’s kitchen last time and i could see how hard it was for the chefs to make a crepe (on a flat non stick!). hence the effort to make a crepe for dean is something to be proud of. don’t be mad at the kuali, aight! teehee.
it should cook very quickly – so the tip with making crepes in the wok is swirling the wok around so your batter doesn’t pool in the middle – kinda like what you would do when you make an omelette.
so…
1. put desired amount of batter in wok – low heat
2. immediately swirl the batter – hold wok using both hands on the wok handle then just swirl it like you would a pot
3. let it settle for a little, then repeat swirling motion
4. turn up heat if you want to add colour to the crepes – only do this at the very end so you don’t end up burning the crepes
have fun π
Hahahahahha oh dear God my head hurts so much now from laughing so hard, you witty wife you!
hahaha that’s definitely not a non stick pan..
Poor crepe
I usually make crepes following this recipe and it works each time. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/basic-crepes/# .Good luck!
Did you use the wok that needs seasoning? They usually stick, and needs some upacara to remove the protective layer. Honestly, I end up throwing them away, and buy non stick instead, hehehe
