dean’s birthday cake

April 12, 2013

I was standing at the KitchenAid section at a store, marveling at the many colours of this designer mixer. Pink, baby blue, mint green, purple, gold, they know how to suck a girl in. Not that I bake, of course, but it was just one of those days when I thought I could if I wanted to. You know, girl power days.

Dean came up to me and scoffed, “Oh don’t worry baby, I can guarantee you that you won’t bake ever,” with extra emphasis on the words guarantee and ever.

I was about to put up a fight, but mehh who am I kidding. He’s so right.

Dean stared at the price of the KitchenAid mixer (almost RM 3,000). “And I’m actually glad that you don’t bake,” and pulled me away from the land of pretty colours faster than lightning.

It was Dean’s birthday recently and his first birthday as my husband. All these years, I’d wait anxiously for the clock to strike 12 and I would immediately dial his number and shout “Happy Birthday!!!!”. Now we actually live together so a phone call won’t be enough. Sigh. I know I had to do something special but what??

I’m going to bake him a cake, I thought.

Luckily I had a box of brownie mix somewhere in the kitchen (I bought it ages ago for emergency cases and I gave myself a pat on the back for being so smart). Emptied out the box into a mixing bowl, cracked an egg, some oil, some water. Voila, batter is ready for the oven.

I stared at the oven staring back at me.

Ok… this is a new place, I have no idea how this particular oven works.

So I decided to ask for expert advice.

(You have to read this conversation, it’s hilarious)

Can you feel my stress?!!

I was sitting in front of the oven the whole time so nothing would catch fire.

But anyway, drama aside, my brownies rose beautifully and it was edible too. Woohooo (Can’t go wrong with the box, yeah yeah shooshh).

I served it with love and Dean was so touched.

Ok fine so now I’ll learn how to do those fancy icing wordings and stuff.

But really, torn paper is just as effective to convey a message.

To the love of my life, happy happy happy birthday!!!!!!! I love you so much and I’m so thankful that Allah granted me such a wonderful person to call my husband. You’re everything I wish for and more, in a man. I cherish everyday with you and I am excited to spend the rest of our lives together. May Allah bless you always!!

“Now let’s eat cake, I made it from scratch!”
