kitchen goddess
October 10, 2013Lately I’ve been feeling super rajin in the kitchen. I don’t know… this is all Masterchef’s fault. Ever since I’ve been hooked to the show, I have some crazy imagination that I must be a kitchen goddess. Like I just must be! Perhaps a hidden talent that needs to be unleashed? I convinced myself this.
I have a few recipe books people got me as wedding gifts (how’d they know.. pfft) so I flipped through them. Gosh the pictures look so good they must have gone through a few rounds of photoshop. I salivated a little flipping through them. In the end, I got stressed because I couldn’t decide on a chicken dish so we ended up eating out that night. Haha.
But this whole eating out business isn’t very healthy if done all the time, so I went to the supermarket and made friends with the butcher guy. Got some tips from him, and found out what fish is good to grill, what fish is good to fry etc etc. Did you guys know seabass is siakap? Anyway!
So I got home. In my head, I’m making a masterchef quality dish. Grilled seabass with mushroom ravioli topped with creamy mushroom sauce, and roasted sliced potatoes seasoned with salt and pepper.
COME ON NOW… Did you guys not drool a bit at that description??
Dean was going to arrive home from work soon. I was frantically moving around the kitchen from pot to pan to oven to grill. If this was a reality show and you fast forwarded me, I would’ve reminded you of a monkey.
Anyway, I was so on my game! Marinated the fish, put it aside to leave it to the end, boiled pasta, mushroom sauce in sauce pan ready to be stirred.
Oooooh! The potatoes in the oven are ready! Tinggg!

owhh vivy..u such as entertainer with your writing.keep it up!!!
nice, crispy looking potatoes! hihi.
haaahaha….Dean kena lagi! make sure in future he doesnt team up with Daniel to `kenakan’ you pulak……
A for effort! Definitely u should give yourself a pat 🙂
Anyway i’m just like u.so into masterchef now that its on tv.i attwmpted a few fancy dishes that they made it looked simple.but apparently not! 😉
So ive given up thinking i had magic wand and fingers in the kitchen at least. Now i try the junior masterchef dishes. Hehe.
I even looked in the prep time needed, time needed to cook, how many ingredients needed. Anything more than 1 hr to prep or cook isnt my thing. It may look easy on tv or super yummilicous on the recipe book but i dare not upset my hubby with loads of burned food and messed up kitchen and almost destroying the oven.
I also make sure the recipe doesnt require more than 10 ingredients cos it also translates more time to prep! I dont have time for that! Nor do i have the patience to stay in the hot kitchen.
So jr masterchef recipes it is,for me, until i find my kitchen magic wand!
Good luck with your cooking! It will get better with practice 🙂
gotta ask. who takes care of Daniel when you’re cooking? I find it nearly impossible without any help. (when my son was just a baby like yours lah, now he’s 16 months old and still follows me around 🙂
WoOww!!!
That is sooooo close to perfect! Keep it up girl!! =D
xoxo
Aaawww funny as always!! This cheered me up after a few low-mood days!
Haha Vivy you’re too funny. Best tip to roast potatoes is to pre-cook them first them only roast them in the oven at 180c but they need to be covered in olive oil or duck fat for them to be perfectly roasted! Tip: add rosemary or dried herbs with garlic to roast with. They’re a match made in heaven! You’re almost there, don’t give up! Cooking can be very therapeutic! Soon you’ll be doing canard a l’orange! Bisous from Paris.
Hihihi vivy…
The potato looks delicious! Sir Ramsay approved! LOL. Maybe cooking is not your thing, that’s okay! it’s the effort than counts!
hehe it starts with understanding the flavors. yknow.. garam n ajinomoto is salty, chicken cube is a little chickeny but be careful not to put too much or it will be salty, pepper is pedas, tomato tangy, chilli sauce pedas manis etc etc. these are the basics and once you are comfortable with making easy dishes you can move on to the fancy elements like paprika, cloves, cinnamon etc. with the basic ingredients you can easily whip up an easy breakfast dish like nasi goreng top with a sunny side up. don’t forget garlic and shallot. these serves as aroma and they have amazing spicy flavor to it! and for an easy roast chicken recipe that is absolutely doable, try this get chicken thigh and drumstick wash and pat dry. keep flat on a bakinv tray skin side up. drizzle oil just enough to keep it moisturised.. salt and pepper and a lil bit of jarred thyme and chopped garlic. give it a good rub and pop it in the oven for 45 min to an hour top. when its halfway done do check if theres blood still oozing out. if it does give it another good 10 mins. while the chicken are in the oven how about a good but still easy potato salad? peel and dice about 4 potatoes and boil then in salted boiling water. when in 10 mins or so poke it with a fork and ull know its done if the fork comes out easily. dont wait until its mushy. drain. put them in a bowl and scoop in dollops of mayo, a bit of apple cider vinegar or whatever vinegar really mine is the cuka tiruan Lol , squeeze half a lemon, maggie cukup rasa, ajinomoto, salt n pepper to taste. just keep tasting along the way. if you have pineapple it would be a nice idea to add in the potato salad, pop in the fridge. best served cold. there thats already a nice dinner there. this goes to all rookie cook out there or simply lazy moms who are too tired to prepare anything complicated. enjoy 🙂
i’m a mother of 3 and u know what…bln lps i baru tau seabass tu siakap :)))) sungguh glamer bunyinye rupa2nya siakappp! bhahaaaa
itssokkkay vivy.
ittsssokkkayyyy…
Please don’t cook using ajienamoto! Bad bad bad!
